Re: Media Renderers which can be controlled by TMM

I've just added LINN MAJIK to the list, based on posts on the LINN Forum. That brings us to 23 devices and counting!

Have anyone tried any of these devices with TMM? I'd like to add these as well, once someone can confirm they work. Thanks.

Will my TEAC WAP-4500, Philips SLA5520 and Archos 605wifi not function with TMM? In that case I stick with Twonky 4.4.

If those devices worked before, they should still work with TMM. This is not intended to comprehensive list of all devices which work with TMM. There are hundreds of other devices not listed here which also work with TMM or TMS. You can view those here: http://www.dlna.org/products

This list is only for devices which can be controlled exterrnally by a Control Point like TMM.

The SLA5520 is controlled by the Cidero control point (but not TEAC and Archos), so maybe TMM will do the trick as well.

Rick - looking forward to news regarding NAS'es with embedded TMS 5.0.

Hi,

I'm not sure but looking on the Philips Streamiumcafe forum it seems that the NP2500 & NP2900 can not be controlled remotely by TMM. Maybe it's a NP2xxx firmware issue and if so I surely would like to know how TMM has succeeded in using both devices as media renderers as the problem is happening on both devices with the latest firmware update. Can someone confirm the test results as listed in the above list and keep us updated what is going on and what are the real test results?

Link to Philips streamiumcafe topic:
http://www.streamiumcafe.com/vBulletin/ ... post105713

Advice and confirmation would be welcome.

Hi BR,

I was not aware the currently shipping Philips 2500 & 2900 cannot be controlled over a network. I've confirmed this is true with the currently shipping 2500 & 2900, but new firmware is coming soon that will address this issue. We're supposed to receive this new firmware very soon, but I don't know when Philips plans to make it available to the public.

I will edit my list to make this more clear. Thanks for pointing this out.

Rick,
thanks for the swift reply.

Looking at the Philips streamiumcafe forum it seems that the lowest model in that family, namely the NP1100, has external control functionalities. It would be nice to see it confirmed by a real tester.

If wanted I can test both models NP2xxx with TMM as I have both but it depends how quick Philips will release new firmware. If it's taking more than 2 weeks I'm running out of my trial period for TMM.

All the best.

I was hoping that the NP1100 was externally controllable as well, but I checked with the device expert in our Berlin office, and learned the NP1100 is not controllable, since it is lacking an AVTransport service.

If I hear about a firmware upgrade for this device, I will mention it here.

Hi Rick,

many thanks for your effort to locally check the NP1100 external control point functionalities.

Because the Philips NPxxxx devices are fairly new on the market I assume not everybody has the full picture or story about their capabilities and Yes by all the releases of new firmwares it's no always easy to have the latest status. That's why I'm trying to follow the Philips Streamiumcafe forum discussions to filter out noise and collect user experiences.

I'm not sure if your local contact has the latest info but looking at the following Streamiumcafe discussion about the NP1100 some users have succeeded to control the device remotely from a PC. I hope their story is correct, as it seems 2 sources confirmed the PC remote control functionallity (software WACHandler & Cidero), but I'm not sure to what extend you can control the NP1100 remotely.

If possible ask a local dealer to borrow a device, updated via the internet to the latest firmware, so you can test it yourself. I will try to obtain one for testing from my local dealer where I bought the other 2 NP2xxx devices but I'm not sure whether I will succeed.

Here is the link to the Streamiumcafe post with PC remote control NP1100 test results:
http://www.streamiumcafe.com/vBulletin/ ... hp?t=20267

I hope this helps and offcourse I am very curious what is the real story. If other software is capable of controlling the NP1100 I hope TMM will have the same features. That would be be fantastic news and a important step to support the NPxxxx devices as they are very flashy and functional with the large LCD and affordable price.

Keep up the good work. :D

I can confirm at least partial support for Linn Sneaky DS. My music library is flac, served from QNAP NAS, so I installed TMM on my PC and used it to stream flac from TMS4.x on my QNAP to the Sneaky. This worked fine, making me wonder why flac support was removed from TMS5. All my embedded album art displays, even AlbumArtist works (so long as the tag name doesn't have a space in it - thank Briain for that tip over on the Linn forum: http://forums.linn.co.uk/bb/showthread.php?tid=1585)

Just one thing missing. TMM doesn't send the playlist to the Sneaky, so when I exit TMM, play stops at the end of the current track. I suspect that TMS5 partially addresses this by storing playlists server-side, but I'm led to believe that the only way to get true gapless playback is to use a manager that pushes the playlist onto the actual device (as the Linn GUI does).

TEAC WAP-4500 in controllable with TMM 5.0 (except for the ability to make playlists).

Hi Tim,

1. Thanks for sharing this info. We didn't intentionally remove FLAC support from TMS 5.0. :( It was an oversight and we're working on adding it back. We're also working on improving FLAC tag support.

2. Per your comments, I'll add the Sneaky DS to the above list.

3. Can anyone confirm that TMM can control any of these devices?

many thanks for your effort to locally check the NP1100 external control point functionalities.

You are correct! After a software update, the AVTransport service appears on the NP1100. MP3 and WMA are playable, however WMDRM and AAC are not supported. I will update this list based on this info. Thanks again!

It would be good to keep a list updated as even the DLNA list is not accurate.

In fact we need 3 lists, one list with NAS supporting Twonkymedia server, one with compatible UPNP players and one with compatible UPNP rendered (i.e. controllable by TMM).

I know it is a bit demanding, but I believe the customers/users of TMM could contribute to this.

Hello,

is the Netgear MP101 controllable?

I can stream to it with the latest TMM version and it's much, much better than Netgear Media Server.

However, whenever I try to add it as a client to Twonky MediaServer using its MAC address and selecting MP101 RTP in the drop-down list, it just does nothing.

I'm new to Twonky, I might be missing something. Anything I do wrong?

MP101 is not compatible, it's not DLNA compliant, not UPnP either, its supported via hacks, as it was a early supported client. ( I used to have 2 of them, but had so many problems, Netgear refunded me).

Thanks for your answer. I'm interested by those hacks anyway. Where could I find them?

I had many problems with the MP101 as well until I use Twonky. The Netgear Mediaserver is not reliable at all. With TMM, everything's OK.

Mark is right of course that the Netgear MP101 is not externally controllable, however I've had no problems using mine to pull music from TwonkyMedia server over an Ethernet connection. It goes right to the Twonky custom nav tree without the need to browse for server containers first (like you do with the Roku). And best of all you can buy them used on Ebay for about $20.

Dunno whether this belongs actually here but I would think so. If I'm wrong please feel free to split and move...
on to my question:
Would it be possible to control the renderer of TMM by an extarnal CP according to UPnP standards? And if not could that be a future feature?
I just did a brief test setup with my standard PC and the demo of TMM. What I was trying to achieve is controlling TMM with Plugplayer, so i would choose Twonky Server as source and TMM Player as renderer. Unfortunately Twonky Player doesn't show up on my list of clients.

I would like to build a self contained Server/Client/Renderer based around TMM. This machine should be located at my HiFi deck and serve as local player as well as mediaserver for the rest of the rooms.

Yes you should be able to use the external renderer in TwonkyMedia manager with any UPnP control point or DLNA digital media controller today. I just used the newest version of PlugPlayer to select "TMMPlayer" on one of our test machines downstairs and pushed a song to it using my phone. I was able to add a track to it's queue, play, pause and change volume -- all using my phone. In this case I was using a Twonky server running on PC, but it could have been any UPnP media server running on any device -- even a NAS or a mobile phone.

You can read more about using PlugPlayer with TwonkyMedia manager here:
http://www.twonkyforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=5714&p=21909#p21909

I know there are still may a few problems with PlugPlayer. If you e-mail me any problems you find, I'll contact PlugPlayer about them and see if we can get them resolved.

Somehow I don't get it right...
I have started my PC and lhave launched TMM. With PlugPlayer Twonky appears on the list of servers (along with another Twonky version running on my NAS) but I don't get any entry under renderers to pick TMM from...I just have PP, my Philips WAK3300 and my Siemens M 740AV. So I can stream from Twonky servers to the other renderers but not to, I can not make PlugPlayer playing music on my PC. Is there a dedicated setting I should set the TMM to, and if so, how do I do it...?
Are there plans to release a Linux version of TMM?

Two things to try:

1. Go to the Apple App Store and check for updates to PlugPlayer. If you don't have the newest update this won't work. I'm running v2.1.2.

2. Make sure to press the "Refresh" button in PlugPlayer. TwonkyMedia manager didn't appear for me today until I did that.

As far as our plans to release a Linux version of TMM, we're focused on getting a Mac version first. We'll consider Linux down the road.

Keep in mind that the server and the client (which includes the renderer) are treated as totally separate items by your firewall. They both need exceptions -- otherwise the renderer will be blocked. Make sure 'Control Point' appears in the exceptions list for your software firewall.

I am using:

- Twonkymedia manager 1.1
- NP2500 with lastest firmware
- Twonkyserver on my NAS

Indeed, when I play FLAC (I have no MP3 hence I do not know if this is related to FLAC only) music selected through Twonkymedia manager on my PC (PUSH mode), the NP2500 does not display the Metadata (it displays UNKNOWN/UNKNOWN).

The metadata (TAGs) are correctly displayed when selecting the music directly through the NP2500 (using the remote control, in PULL mode).

I guess this is related to the NP2500 as I have the same problem using another Control Point software (4U2SHARE).
Can someone confirm?

Thanks for reporting this issue. I suspect this issue only occurs with FLAC files, because we have a NP2500 and NP2900 here and they both work great with MP3 files.

I've created a ticket for this issue so our engineers can see if we can do anything to fix this. In case you want to check status on this issue in the future, ask about MM-2438. What firmware are you running on the Philips? We have a conference call with Philips once a week, so I can make sure they're aware of this as well. :)

Thanks.

Version is V5.75S

I wish Philips was reading and answering its forum the way PV/Twonky does it.
They are completely absent from the forums they created (streamiumcafe).

Another thing I noticed, which might be again related to the NP2500 playing FLACS, is that when you drag and drop the entire content of an album on the NP2500 icon (twonkymedia manager), it plays the first title, then stops. I need to push on the >I (next track) to get the next title played, etc.

Could this be due to the fact that the server is running on the NAS (where my music is) and the manager on the PC?
I'm saying that because 4U2SHARE does not have same issue when playing an album.

Good news. :) We believe the metadata issues you're seeing have been fixed in a Philips firmware upgrade. The firmware we're running here is V10.0.0 -- which unfortunately hasn't been released to the public yet. Keep checking your device for ugrades.

Rick,

Please also note that several NP2x00 customers are reporting the fact (in the Streamiumcafe forum) that with same latest NP2x00 firmware release, using FLAC or MP3, when trying to play a whole album in PUSH mode, it stops after the first track (you need to click on the >I next track if you want to hear it.

Again, it might be a NP2x00 bug?

I believe that was fixed as well by TMM v1.1 and the new Philips firmware. If you experience this after you update your device with the new firmware, please let me know. Thanks.

Nope. We want to make TMM work well with as many devices as possible. If you are aware of problems with any currently shipping Philips device, let me know and I will pass them on to the right people at Philips. So far, they have been very responsive about fixing problems that we've reported. :)

Rick,
checked TMM 1.1 and WAS 7500 Firmware 1.28. One can push an mp3 file to the WAS and it get's played. Only information on the display is comptete URI of file like TMM handles it (including http://, dlna string, database releated stuff, filename and file extension). ID3 tags like artist and album are not shown and album art is not visible also. Length of song is shown correctly. If WAS is in standby mode and file is pushed to it, file get's played and after playing complete song the WAS takes a reboot! Issue is repeatable.
One can push differend mp3 files to WAS at the same time, but only the first one is played without user interaction. Functions like volume, stop, pause, skip and play can be used. Direct connection from WAS to TMM, browsing content and search is o.k. ID3 tags like artist and album are shown as "unknown" and no album art during playmode. Behavior for TMM and Philips WAC 7500 Firmware 1.28 is absolutely the same. Browsing library of WAC from TMM is limited to playlists only. (browsing the complete library is not possible) Pushed mp3 files from TMM to WAS 6050 Firmware 1.80 and WAS dropped out of network (wireless) during the first song. Name of song was correct on display, but no album or artist. Issue with network dropout is repeatable.

So although ARCHOS devices can see the TM server to PULL files, TMM cannot PUSH files to them.

Is that correct ??

I must admit, I am at a loss as to why you would want to PUSH files to a device that you're not sitting in front of that is capable of PULLing the data.

I'm obviously missing something ??

One user on this forum said he could push files to the ARCHOS TV box, but that it didn't work everytime. I don't have any ARCHOS devices to test. I wish I did. They look cool.

In order to receive pushed files you need to either support UPnP AV transport OR be a DLNA 1.5-compliant DMR. You can tell which devices are DMRs, but searching for them on the DLNA.org Web site. There is also a partial list in this forum.

There are a several reasons why you'd want to push files to a device that you're not sitting in front. The main reasons are that it's much faster and easier to simply drag and drop a genre, artist or album onto a renderer than to do the same using the handheld remote that comes with most devices. The mouse wins easily, even over really expensive remotes like the $400 Sonos controller or touch screens like the iPhone, but the bottom line is -- it's your choice. If you don't like drag and drop, you can use the traditional pull method.

Here are some more details about this, in case you care:

I'd already read the "Why Pushing Media is Better" thread, but thanks anyway

No ARCHOS devices are lised on the DLNA site !!

It's a shame that ARCHOS won't offer up any of their devices for companies like yourselves, as I had a similar issue with Tversity and they didn't have any ARCHOS devices either. Twonky Media Server worked first time "out of the box", so I have stuck with it.

I don't mean to dismiss TMM as it looks good, but my PC is in my office and the Archos TV is in the lounge, so there's no reason I would go into the office to PUSH files to the Archos when in the lounge, as I use TMS to PULL files - much quicker in my world.

I did find a novel way of getting files to play on my laptop though.

I installed TMM on my laptop and then used the Home Network option on my Nokia N96 to remote control files to be played on the TMM player on the laptop using files that were stored on the TMS PC in my office !!

So PUSH is OK on some situations.

I've seen this work as well and it's cool. There are some other nice mobile controller software packages as well.

- Rudeo Control works even better than the Nokia controller. Unfortunately it currently runs on Pocket PC only.
- PlugPlayer works well for those with iPhones.
- PacketVideo (where I work) is working on one, but it's not available yet.

Are there any others I'm missing?

According to some blog and forum posts, Reciva Internet radios are now externally controllable.
http://aewificonfig.blogspot.com/2008/09/reciva-radio-as-remotely-controlable.html

There are many different Reciva-compatable radios available including the following:
- Tangent Quattro MKII (requires v257 or later firmware)
- Grace Wireless Internet Radio (ITC-IR1000)
- Magicbox IMP
- Vistron MX-200i

There are many more Reciva-compatable radios available, here is a list:
http://logikir100.tripod.com/recivamodels.htm

If you have one of these, could you please test it with TMM and post your results here? Thanks.

Re: Digital media renderers which can be controlled by TMM

I just been testing my Reciva based Logik IR100 and i can confirm that the controller does not work with it, you cannot enqueue songs or swap to the next one, in fact you do not see the queue or what is actually playing (from the computer obviously) amusingly the only thing that works is the volume, you can mute your radio from the computer but that is all so far. My Logik has the latest beta firmware.
Any ideas, workarounds?
Thanks, Alex

Are you saying you can't even push a single song to the Logik IR100? If that's the case, it sounds like they don't fully support the UPnP AV transport protocol.

What normally works with most DMRs:
- Should be able to push a song or a container (e.g. album)
- Should be able to view metadata on media that you push to the device
- Should have full control of transport controls on songs that were pushed
- Should have full control of transport controls on songs that were pulled from the device (even from another server)
- Volume control should work
- You should be able to push Internet-based media (in this case, this may not make any sense).

What some devices have problems with:
- Some device stop before completing an entire playlist
- Some devices like receiver don't allow control of volume
- Some devices don't display metadata on content pulled from another server

We can sometimes help with the last three items, but their client software should be able to handle the first group of requirements. The good news is they are going to need to make this work if they want to get DLNA-1.5 certification as a DMR. And Reciva is going to DLNA plug-fest, so this appears to be a goal of theirs. Once they fix this, you'll just need to download a firmware update and your device with work with TwonkyMedia manager.

After reading (for many days) about various boxes to put in my living room a basic question seems to need to be ask. I am in the process of installing a HP media server with windows home server and Twonky. I want HQ video and a decent interface for my 20K song music library. Is the right answer to just wait for the Atom 330 with ION running windows 7 and media player 12? The early prices set the hardware at 299. Popcorn and others have a poor interface for a large collections and I am beginning to wonder if this is the best and most flexible solution.

I'm you'll get several different perspectives on this question. Here's mine:

I've been running TwonkyMedia server 4.4 on an HP MediaSmart Server for over a year 24/7 without a single problem. It's a very stable -- easy to manage and administer system. Of course there are other great NAS boxes that run Twonky as well.

Although I suggest you start with WMP 12 -- after all free is hard to beat, I suspect you'll end up running a more full featured client like TMM or TMC. Here's why:

TwonkyMedia software goes beyond Window 7’s media sharing/control capabilities by including the following important features:

No iTunes import -- WMP cannot import from an iTunes database and playlists

Server-side Playlist Support – Windows 7 does not currently support server-side playlists. This is very important because without it, changes made on one PC are not viewable on other PCs and devices in the home. Without server-side playlists, it’s much harder for users to easily share playlists and slideshows.

Support for non-Windows OS – Windows Media Player will not run natively under Macintosh or Linux operating systems. TwonkyMedia server runs on the Windows, Mac and Linux operating systems. Microsoft has discontinued support for Windows Media Player (WMP) on Macintosh and has no plans to port WMP 12 to run under either Mac or Linux. Mac support is important, because of Apple’s significant market share gains in the PC space.

Remote Access Support – Microsoft has not announced plans to add remote access capabilities to their media server which is included with Windows 7. This will make it difficult for consumers to access their media outside of the home. PacketVideo provides these capabilities on all new HP MediaSmart servers today, and plans to add remote access support to TwonkyMedia manager later this year.

Internet Feed Support – TwonkyMedia manager/server support of a wide-range of media feeds including YouTube, Photobucket, Flickr, Shoutcast as well as handpicked audio and video feeds. Media feed support is not available with Windows Media Player 12. This is important because without it, it’s difficult to view Internet media on your TV or digital photo frame.

Other reasons
-- Only star rankings can be changed on a DMR. TwonkyMedia does not have this limitation.
-- Windows Media Player 12 can transcode from one format to another – but it can’t transcode to a DMR
-- Windows Media Player 12 is externally controllable, but the option to make it a DMR is disabled by default. It's control over DMRs is much more basic than TMM or TMC
-- The DMR capability in Windows Media Player 12 does not currently work with photo slideshows.
-- Better large library performance
-- Support for formats WMP 12 cannot support
-- Ability to run TMM without a media server running on your PC

Unfortunately, the two biggest advantages of TwonkyMedia over Windows 7 are two unreleased features I can't talk about yet, but you'll be hearing more about later this year. Their impact on media serving and control will be substantial.

The point is not to exclude Twonky media manager, the point is to use a settop box I can fix. All the media rendering boxes seem to have short comings. I just want a set-top box that can be controlled via 3rd party party and an Atom 330 and ION seem to fit that build. The big bulky interfaces do not work well for very large music collections (hence the TMM), and a set-top device that can play 1080P, MKV, and MOV.

In my scenario I would use the baby PC to do my render, and Twonky MM for 3rd party control.with HP Media server running Twonky server and of course WHS.
