TwonkyMedia Manager 1.3.0 Release Notes

by TMM_Product_Manager on Sat Dec 19, 2009 1:01 am

New Features
- New SQL database - Includes TwonkyMedia server 5.1.2 which has a higher performance database than our previous release. You should notice faster scan times, better large library performance and less CPU usage than before.
- Facebook Photo support – You can now access your Facebook photos and your friend’s Facebook photos from any device that works with TwonkyMedia manager.
- Handpicked Video feeds - Like Handpicked Radio, this is a collection of video feeds that we've aggregated. Keep in mind that not every device can play all of these files.
- Expanded Device Support – We’ve more than doubled the list of devices that work with TwonkyMedia manager. You can view the updated list in the Help section.
- Trial users now have access to more media feeds (SHOUTcast, Photobucket and Picasa Web).
- Windows 7 compliance - TwonkyMedia server 5.1 has been tested by Microsoft against their Windows 7 compliance test suite and passed all tests. That means Windows Media Player can act as a digital media player pulling media from TwonkyMedia server.
- Compilation Directories – You can now enter a comma-separated list of directories on the Server Browser settings page that will force the server to handle the contents of those folders as music compilations.
- Enhanced Removable Media Support – When a new removable media device (e.g. USB memory stick) is plugged in, the server will share all media files on the device automatically. When the device is unplugged, the files on it will automatically be removed from the server.
- Background Transcoding - We are able to transcode media in the background whenever the PC is not busy performing other tasks. This is based on the same plug-in architecture we use for our on-the-fly transcoding.
- Device-specific views – TwonkyMedia server supports multiple views (navigation trees) for the same content. Now, advanced users can create different XML-based views for different devices.
- Expanded Handpicked Videos - The list of available hardpicked videos has been expanded.
- Option to Install TwonkyBeam – After TMM 1.3 is installed you now have the option to install TwonkyBeam v1.0.

Performance and Productivity-related Changes
- You’ll experience better performances with large media libraries (faster scan times, more responsive, lower CPU usage).
- iTunes import is 5x faster and uses less CPU power.
- This release installs and uninstall must faster than previous releases.
- View switching performance is better when the server is busy (e.g. when rebuilding the database).
- We’ve redesigned the Settings window (see ‘Settings Page Changes’ below for details).
- The media server responds better when very large (>1000) song containers are dropped into the playlist area.
- We’ve changed the way icons and renderer names are received from the network, resulting in a big improvement in startup times – especially on networks with lots on devices on them.
- We improved load times for Flickr photos.
- We expanded the number of SHOUTcast radio stations that we display.
- We created an “Add to guest playlist” hot key. Select an item, then press the Shift key along with the + key.
- You can right-click on renderer icons in the Now Playing window to change their name or icon.
You can type into the Chat window without first clicking in the bottom.
- Dragging a large container into the playlist section no longer causes the mouse to freeze.

Interface Changes
- We added "Album" to the navigation tree for music when Folder view is selected.
- The local renderer is anchored as the first device in the Now Playing window, followed by other currently playing renderers.
- Before, view selection wasn’t stored when switching between Manage & Now Playing screens. The state of each view is now completely independent, and maintained when you switch tabs, change views or close the app.
- We display a dialog during all file scan operations that better sets user expectations.
- We added an “Auto-display” preference to the new Chat window settings section. Unchecking this will cause chat messages to not automatically appear.
- A new buffering indicator is displayed for online videos.
- TwonkyMedia manager will remember the size of the cover art or metadata section in Album Art view.
- Pressing the Restore Settings button near the bottom of the Settings window deletes the Flash SOL file and repopulates it with default system settings. After pressing this button, a message appears saying that some settings will only be reset after TwonkyMedia manager is restarted.
- Adding a new media path automatically starts a content rescan and displays the Rescan in Progress cursor.
- We fixed a problem where changing the name of the local renderer on one PC running TwonkyMedia manager didn’t display the change on another PC running TwonkyMedia manager.
- We added a glow effect to the Repeat and Shuffle buttons to make it more clear that they are enabled.
- We changed the name of the Listen In feature to Tune In.
- We changed the name of the Internet Radio media feed to Handpicked Radio.

Device-related Improvements
- You should be able to pause videos streamed to Samsung DLNA-enabled TVs.
- We enhanced the browsing experience with Sony Bravia TVs. Users no longer need to select the content type twice.
- We fixed a problem where playlists sometimes didn’t play on the Roku Soundbridge.
- We addressed problems that used to occur when dragging a playlist of FLAC songs to Philips NP Series network music players.
- We no longer replay the previous song after a device fails to respond properly to a play command. Now, we just stop playback.
- We filter Sonos from the server list, since it doesn’t work with TwonkyMedia manager as a server. Sonos devices continue to work well as media players when you push music to them with TwonkyMedia manager.
- We added HP Netbook artwork to our list of devices. To select it, right click on an icon in the Play Here section and select Change Icon.
- We added a Samsung TV icon to our list of devices.
- We added an icon for the Apple iPhone to our list of available devices.
- We no longer display the Kodak EX-1011 in the Play Here section, because it can only pull photos from our server.
- We removed duplicate Philips Streamium icons from the device icon list.
- The currently playing song on a Sonos ZonePlayer is displayed in the Now Playing window, when a song has been pushed from another PC.

Settings Page Changes
- We redesigned the entire Settings page window so it's easier to use and fits better on small screens.
- We moved the Check for Update button under the License Key area of the Product section.
- We moved the Language settings into the Product tab.
- We added the server version number and number of songs, photos and videos files found to the Product section.
- We added TwonkyMedia Web site and Forum links to the Product section.
- We moved renderer-related settings to a new Renderers tab.
- We eliminated the Advanced Server Settings tab. All server settings now appear on one page. You need to scroll down to see some settings.
- Icons have replaced the old advanced server setting buttons. Mouse over a button to view its tool tip.
- We redesigned the entire Media Feeds settings page.

Other Changes
- We added an exception that prevents the dialog for the Windows firewall software from appearing upon first launch.
- User-entered Metadata Import - The new installer automatically imports all metadata from the TwonkyMedia server 5.0 database.
- We’ve improved our file scanner so it reads ratings from MP4 files.
- We fixed problems reordering songs in a Tune In queue.
- The installer no longer displays a detecting iTunes message when "Detect and use iTunes..." is disabled on the Advanced Install Options page.
- Closing the Preview window always stops slideshows, even when they are pushed from another PC.
- Entering a username with the German letter "ä" no longer causes problems.
MAC addresses are now stored in the log file.
- The dbdir can be set in the .ini file. You can also change the path for all data of the server instantly using the appdir <some path> parameter on startup.

Same behaviour with TMM 1.3, FLAC and the Philips NP Series, it does not go automatically from one track to the other. In other words, PUSH mode is unusable (Rick, you're right, I should have said 'unusable with the Philips NP series and FLAC', I have not tested other possible configurations and encoding formats).

Push works with most other devices. We've opened a ticket on this as I think you know. I'm sure we'll eventually be able to resolve this.

Navtree creation - where art thou?

by Tim on Mon Dec 21, 2009 12:27 pm

Am I missing something or is the navtree creation option still absent from the web interface (port 9000)?
Will the user-friendly navtree creation (as we knew it from version 4) ever be back?
Is there any other way to easily create navtrees with version 5 (without editing XML files)?

Thanks for any help in advance

You are correct that easy nav tree customization is still missing. We understand that MANY of you would like this feature added back. It's possible that feature is added back next year. We'll have to see.

Client-only installation

by Adam8000 on Mon Dec 21, 2009 10:27 pm

Are there still plans to provide a setup option for installing the client part only? I already run the TMS on a server and want to use the TMM client as a digital media controller (DMC). I do not want to run the TMS beeing part of TMM.

Any post-installation tricks would also do it (besides manually stopping the server after every start of the TMM).

Thank you,
Adam

Hit there,

Would like to share this solution:

Sorting in TMM when using folder view was showing the tracktitle order. Normally I would prefer the real alphabetical order by track# and title like on the CD.

To to solve this please backup and modify view-definitions.xml and look for the part listed below (Search for "folder") add the part:
sortcriteria='+upnp:originalTrackNumber,+dc:title'"
as listed below in red. After this restart the server and the sort order should be like on the original CD.

Good luck!
GWS

<container name='folder' id='music/folders' class='object.container.storageFolder' createClass='object.item.audioItem.musicTrack'>
<container buildon='res' sortcriteria='+upnp:originalTrackNumber,+dc:title' createClass='object.item.audioItem.musicTrack' class='object.container.storageFolder' />
</container>
view-definitions.xml
Modified view-definitions.xml to FIX sort order by folder view to show by track order (not by title)

We did some of the work needed to run TMM as a standalong DMC in this release. We plan to finish this work in our next release (v1.4). Sorry it's taking so long. TMM v1.4 is currently scheduled for late Q1 although you'll probably see betas before then.

Problem: Can’t click on the Browse view or Album Art view buttons immediately after installing TMM. Both buttons are grayed out.

Solution:
Option 1 – Reboot your PC
Option 2 – Open Task Manager. Locate TwonkyMediaManager.exe and “end process”. Relaunch TMM.

Thanks for your reply, Rick.

To me, that's a major nuisance.
Although I already paid for the new version, I will not upgrade to Twonky 5 until this has been fixed.
And I mean fixed.
I consider this omission a bug.

Merry Christmas

After updating from TwonkyMedia Server 5.0.68 (TMM1.2) to 5.1.2 (TMM1.3), streaming MPEG2 videos from TwonkyMedia Server to a Sony KDL-32V5800 causes problems. In the list of available movies, only one out of 14 movies appears on the Sony.
If I browse the list with the TMM, all movies are listed. The previous version (5.0.68) worked fine, all movies were listed. Changing the device type from "Sony Bravia" to "Generic Media Receiver" or changing the navigation type shows no effect.
The network connection is working, all movies are DVB-S records, converted with Avidemux to MPEG2 PS.

Re: TwonkyMedia Manager 1.3 Now Available!

The good news:
TMM 1.3 Works brilliantly with my Bravia 40W5500. It finds JVC MOD files, pretends they are Mpeg2's and allows them to be pushed or pulled perfectly. Well done TMM team, that's one in the eye for WMP12!

The bad news:
Ironically, whilst the above works really well, TMM finds all my MOD files but won't play them itself as it says the local renderer can't play the file because the codec isn't installed. I have a codec installed which allows WMP12 to play MOD files.

Is there an easy answer?

Best wishes

We can look into this Pete. To check status on this issue, ask about MM-3363.

Would it be possible for you to send me a relatively small MOD file for testing purposes? Also, please send me a link where I can download the MOD codec.

Send to tmm-beta@pv.com.

O.K. we are ready to try to fix this now. Can someone please send me an MPEG-2 file that used to work with TMS 5.0 that no longer appears in 5.1? Obviously, we'd like the smallest file as possible. E-mail it to tmm-beta@pv.com.

Rick, you announced a few month ago, that the TMM will be available and released without included and installed Server ( a "NAS-edition"). Now the server and the watchdog are built-in. I guess, there are many users, that don't want to install the server or rather have to stop the services.

This is still our plan. If things go as planned, you'll be able to run TMM as a DMC only without a local server.

I tried upgrading to this one - uninstalled version 1.2.0.22 and installed 1.3.

All my photographs display as thumbnails ( around 160 pixels) when viewed through my mediagate media player. removing 1.3 and reinstalling 1.2.0.22 means my photos now show a full screen again.
Why?

According to the box its a Mediagate MG-800HD.

The box says its UPnP and DLNA compliant.; Both 1..2.0.22 and 1.3 identify it as a PowerZest.

Hi,
My .JPG photos now look terrible in version 1.3, forcing me to use Windows Media instead of Twonky for them.
They look fine when using Windows Media to serve them and they were fine in the previous version of Twonky.
.JPG photos should be passed through as-is with no transcoding, no sharpening or any other processing whatsoever.
Is there a new setting or something I may be missing?
I am using a PS3 via it's built-in wireless. My main Core2 Quad PC is the server.
Thanks,

I think this is the workaround to the NAS issue. Let me know if this doesn't work for you.

If any of you are having problems with Vista logon to NAS devices running Samba, try:

1. Run secpol.msc
2. Go to: Local Policies > Security Options
3. Find "Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level"
4. Change Setting from "Send NTLMv2 response only" to "Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated"

Vista defaults to only send the more secure NTLMv2 protocol, which these NAS devices / Samba do not support.

Hi,

is it correct that I will get a license for TMM 1.3 AND for TMS 5.1.x if I buy TMM 1.3?

Under
TwonkyMedia Manager FAQ (Full unedited version)
one can read:

Q: Is it possible to purchase the license for the new manager and then use this for as well the server on my Linux box, as well as the client on my windows pc (and potentially hopefully also Mac in future)? Are there any issues concerning the usage on two machines, different operating systems or is the new manager not splitted at all into client and server?

A: TMM keys work on TMS 5.0 running on Mac or Windows. I'm not sure about Linux PCs, but I suspect they will work there as well. Here is more info on license questions.

§ A single TMM license key can be used on up to 3 different PCs running TMM

§ A single TMS license key can be used on up to 2 different PCs running TMS. We asked to up this to 3, but I don't know when this will happen.

Does that mean that licensing TMM 1.3 results in a license key for TMS 5.1.x that can be used on 2 different machines?

Best regards

The short answer is yes, but it's a little more complicated than that.

A TMM 1.x license key can be used to license:
- TMS 4.4.11 or later
- TMS 5.x
- TMM 1.x

New license keys may be required for TMS 6.0 and TMM 2.0.

Our licensing is tied to a Mac address. A desktop or NAS consumes a single Mac address. If you have a laptop, that may consume two Mac addresses whether wireless is enabled or not.

TMS 4.x works on up to 2 Mac addresses
TMS 5.x works on up to 3 Mac addresses
TMM 1.x works on up to 3 Mac addresses

Thanks for your fast answer!

But wouldn´t that mean that one can use TMS 5.x on 3 different NAS and i.e. simultaneously 2 further TMS 4.4.11 on two other NAS?

I am not interested in that scenario because I am willing to license MM 1.x including a license for TMS 5.x but nevertheless would be glad if you confirmed that (TMS 5.x on 3 different NAS and i.e. simultaneously 2 further TMS 4.4.11 on two other NAS).

Thanks and best regards

Nope. You could run either 3 NAS running 5.x server OR 2 NAS running 4.x server, but not both.

Any advance on this?

kasut wrote:I tried upgrading to this one - uninstalled version 1.2.0.22 and installed 1.3.

All my photographs display as thumbnails ( around 160 pixels) when viewed through my mediagate media player. removing 1.3 and reinstalling 1.2.0.22 means my photos now show a full screen again.
Why?

TMM_Product_Manager wrote:I think this is the workaround to the NAS issue.

Hi,
thanks I tested the solution with my QNAP409 and it didn't do the trick. However I found a solution anyway.

I needed to create a user for the Windows 7 account on the QNAP then it worked. With XP it worked fine through the standard guest account. I haven't analyzed it further for the time being, but it seems that it could be an idea to have the possibility to add a user/password field for Network shares to TMM.

All work on 1.3.1 is done and the file has been sent to our Web team to post on the site. It should be here in the next day or two. Sorry for the long delay.

I've upgraded to the newest version of TMM... now streaming to my Xbox360 is broken.

All video files come up as 'Unsupported' when trying to play them. The Xbox360 is my only source of media streaming in my entertainment room. I think I'll be downgrading until this is resolved.

Sorry to hear about that. Are you running TMM 1.3.0.101 or TMM 1.3.1.27? 1.3.1 was just posted.

Hi,

I do not understand the license model and hope that one can help me!

Especially I do not understand the meaning of
"Our licensing is tied to a Mac address. A desktop or NAS consumes a single Mac address. If you have a laptop, that may consume two Mac addresses whether wireless is enabled or not. "

I licensed a TMM 1.3.x and of course all my desktops do have integrated LAN chips but I usually only use WLAN. So what does that mean for me?

1)
The installation of TMM installs TMS too automatically (under Windows) although I only want to use my notebook for TMM. What does happen with my 3 licenses for a TMS then? Can I disable TMS on my notebook - keeping my TMS license for another pc - and afterwards install TMS on another PC only running TMS but not TMM? Theoretically it must be possible to install 3 TMM and 3 TMS licenses on 6 different machines.

2)
And what about consuming 2 Mac-Adresses whether wireless lan is enabled?

Each modern notebook does have an integrated LAN controler. Does that mean that you will consume 2 TMS and 2 TMS licenses of the three ones if you install TMM on a notebook with integrated LAN card although you only make use of wireless lan?

Or does the license model mean that I will have to disable my LAN-Card if I used wireless LAN in order to be able to make use of one TMS license (3 TMS, 3 TMM)?

3)
What happens if my notebook does crash and I have to send it to a repair center?
Is the license tight to the crashed notebook or can I use my license meanwhile on another notebook?

4)
You write :" TMM 1.x works on up to 3 Mac addresses, TMS 5.x works on up to 3 Mac addresses"
Does that mean that I can install TMS on more than 3 machines but only use it on 3 machines simultaneously?

Best regards
Sidney

Q: The installation of TMM installs TMS too automatically (under Windows) although I only want to use my notebook for TMM. What does happen with my 3 licenses for a TMS then?

A: It's true that TMM installs TMS, but this doesn't consume an extra license. In TMM 2.0, you can opt to not install a local copy of TMS if desired.

Q: Can I disable TMS on my notebook - keeping my TMS license for another pc - and afterwards install TMS on another PC only running TMS but not TMM? Theoretically it must be possible to install 3 TMM and 3 TMS licenses on 6 different machines.

A: You don't have to disable TMS on your notebook, if you want to install on another PC. If more than 3 Mac addresses are in use, then we only allow the last 3 to run. The maximum PCs that can run at once is 3 desktops. If you're running notebooks then the maximum that can run at once is 2.

Q: And what about consuming 2 Mac-Addresses whether wireless LAN is enabled? Each modern notebook does have an integrated LAN controller.

A: A TMM license can be used on either TMM or TMS. Running TMM (with TMS) does not consume extra licenses. A laptop consumes two licenses whether you have wireless disabled or not.

Q: What happens if my notebook does crash and I have to send it to a repair center?
Is the license tight to the crashed notebook or can I use my license meanwhile on another notebook?

A: You just reinstall TMM/TMS when your laptop is returned. The last install will always run. If you have other systems which no longer run, then you contact us and we will be happy to reset your license so that you can reinstall on up to 3 PCs.

Q: You write :" TMM 1.x works on up to 3 Mac addresses, TMS 5.x works on up to 3 Mac addresses"
Does that mean that I can install TMS on more than 3 machines but only use it on 3 machines simultaneously?

No. If you install it on 4 desktops, only the last 3 will run.

One final comment: We realize our existing licensing system isn't perfect and is too confusing. As a result, we're planning to change to a new system as soon as possible.

Dear Rick,

thanks for your reply but now I am confused more than before! :?

For example I do not understand your reply:
"If more than 3 Mac addresses are in use, then we only allow the last 3 to run. The maximum PCs that can run at once is 3 desktops. If you're running notebooks then the maximum that can run at once is 2. "

How do you differentiate a laptop from a pc?

I licensed one TMM 1.x. So I think I can run 3 TMS on 3 different Mac Adresses and 3 TMM on 3 different Mac Adresses. Or am I wrong?

I have one NAS, 1 Netbook, 1 notebook and 1 PC.

On the NAS I am only running TMS! So I should have 3 further TMS licenses for the netbook, notebook and pc, shouldn´t I?

How many TMS are left after installing one on my NAS?
Can´t I install 2 more TMS then (on my Notebook and on the PC)?

Since I obviously did not understand the license model correctly I installed TMM on my PC, Notebook and Netbook and a NAS-Version on my NAS. So what happens now? Obviously on my netbook after installing TMM one TMS is running too!?

Sorry, but I really have problems to understand that. Can I simply remove TMM from my netbook in order to get back 1 TMM and 1 TMS for installation on an other machine?

Best regards

Sorry about that. I'll try again.

Q: How do you differentiate a laptop from a PC?

A: We don't. But our current licensing system checks for Mac addresses and because of the wireless connection, laptops have two Mac addresses. You can see this yourself if you go to the Server Status window.

I licensed one TMM 1.x. So I think I can run 3 TMS on 3 different Mac Adresses and 3 TMM on 3 different Mac Adresses. Or am I wrong?

No. You can run any combination of TMM or TMS on a TOTAL of 3 Mac addresses.

I have one NAS, 1 Netbook, 1 notebook and 1 PC. On the NAS I am only running TMS! So I should have 3 further TMS licenses for the netbook, notebook and pc, shouldn´t I?

That depends whether you had to enter a license key on your NAS in order to get TMS to run. If you did not, then you still can run on up to 3 more PCs. If you did, then you can run on up to 2 more PCs.

How many TMS are left after installing one on my NAS?

2 more desktop PCs OR 1 more laptop.

Since I obviously did not understand the license model correctly I installed TMM on my PC, Notebook and Netbook and a NAS-Version on my NAS. So what happens now? Obviously on my netbook after installing TMM one TMS is running too!?

Your PC will probably give you an error message.

Can I simply remove TMM from my netbook in order to get back 1 TMM and 1 TMS for installation on an other machine?

No. You need to contact us and have us reset your key.
